Maintaining lawns and gardens in drought conditions

Lawns and gardens are starting to feel the effects of a long, hot summer and some are struggling with the heat.

Garden and lawncare expert Victa has joined with horticulturalist Adam Woodhams to provide some top tips to help lawns and gardens survive hot weather
and drought conditions.

“Dry and drought conditions can present some of the greatest challenges for lawns and gardens. Most of the things than can be done to help your garden
and lawn through a dry time actually happen before a dry spell hits,” says Adam.

Water slowly yet deeply

This will develop deeper root systems in both lawn and garden plants. A deeper root system is more likely to find moisture as things dry out and it’s
less likely to be damaged by extreme heat. Remember to always be aware of local water use guidelines or restrictions.

Regularly apply soil conditioners such as bio-fertiliser or seaweed tonic

These add bacteria to the soil and stimulate other biological activity to help create organic matter deep down around the roots. This ‘embedded’ organic
matter is excellent at retaining moisture right where the plants need it most.

Mulch

Keep the garden well mulched and run the mower on mulching mode. This helps to both retain valuable moisture and insulate the soil and plant roots
from hot weather.

Water wisely

When watering during dry conditions make sure to water early in the morning before the air and soil heats up – and water slowly but deeply. Consider
installing a subsurface drip watering system too.

Don’t panic!

Even if the lawn starts to look very sad it may well surprise you. Good quality, well-established lawns can reach a point where they almost appear
to be dead yet after the first decent downpour they’ll miraculously reshoot.

Jacobsen support training seminars in Kuala Lumpur

Jacobsen, the commercial mower and turf maintenance equipment manufacturer, supported a two-day training seminar for technicians, ahead of the CIMB Classic,
held at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).

The training, for both superintendents and technicians, was sponsored by the Golf Course Superintendents’ Association of Malaysia (GCSAM).

The tournament is the first US PGA Tour event outside of mainland USA and received full FedEx Cup points, full Money List and World Ranking status. The
winner was the American golfer Ryan Moore, who beat fellow countryman Gary Woodland in a play-off after many rain delays.

On the two days prior to the tournament Jacobsen, together with their local distributor Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, supported a training and educational
seminar programme for 36 volunteers, superintendents and technicians from around the region.

Glen Forsdike, Customer Support Manager from Jacobsen’s Ipswich manufacturing plant in the UK, flew to Kuala Lumpur to help Glenn Wright, Technical Training
Manager for Asia Pacific and Kajapathy Duraimaniam of Sime Darby, present the training to the technicians in the group.

The first day was devoted to the theory of basic hydraulic systems and safety symbols. The delegates were split into four groups and each group completed
exercises on four different Jacobsen machines. Each training session lasted two hours, after which the groups rotated and by the end of the day they
completed exercises at each machine.

The second day covered electrical systems and followed the same format as the previous day. The rotation was completed by mid-afternoon at which time the
superintendents, who had their own programme organised by KLGCC’s superintendent Mohd Nizam Othman and Andy Johnson from Sentosa, joined the technicians
for a grinding workshop run by Steve Wilson from Bernhards and a sprayer calibration exercise run by Glenn Wright.

Commenting on the two-day event, Glenn Wright said the education programme went extremely well and was enthusiastically received by all the participants.

“The involvement of the delegates was superb and their thirst for knowledge was insatiable. We had lots of questions and more than a few laughs due to
the relaxed atmosphere at KLGCC’s world-class maintenance facility. The KLGCC team did a great job with Mohd Nizam Othman, the Golf Course Superintendent,
Abas Ismail, the Workshop Manager and all their staff opening the doors of their facility and going out of their way to make everyone welcome.

“What was impressive was that KLGCC were hosting their third major tournament of the year – they hosted the European PGA Maybank Malaysian Open in March
and the Sime Darby LPGA tournament barely two weeks before the CIMB. That has to be a world first! No club has ever hosted three tournaments in one
calendar year, one each from the USPGA, EPGA and LPGA,” Mr Wright concluded.

Victorian rebate program means businesses can now afford the best from Kärcher

For small industry-specific business (e.g. automotive, cleaning, industrial, groundskeeping, mechanical, etc), high-end pressure cleaners can be a costly
capital expense, but under the Living Victoria Water Rebate Program, Victorian businesses with fifty or less employees are now able claim up to $2000
back on their Kärcher pressure cleaners.

A high calibre and effective pressure cleaner is a necessity for a wide range of industries, required for customer presentation in regards to safety and
hygiene. Kärcher is an industry leader for commercial pressure cleaners, offering everything from heavy-duty hot or cold units to small mobile upright
cleaners.

If you have a small mechanical or groundskeeping business, Kärcher’s Super Class pressure cleaner can remove dirt or grime that would otherwise require
a stationary cleaning. Alternatively, Kärcher’s stationary cleaner can be installed, which save a lot of space in single-lance operations.

If your business does not require such a high performing cleaner, the medium and compact classes still pack a punch, and can be used on most jobs. The
upright cleaner is the entry level commercial cleaner and is ideal for small businesses in maintaining a professional appearance.

It is a difficult balance for small businesses in keeping standards high while keeping costs low. High-level equipment is an essential part of maintaining
those standards, but the expense can often mean an unwanted compromise. With the Water Rebate Program, Victorian businesses can now afford the highest
quality pressure cleaners from Kärcher.

Andrew Callinan from Kärcher said a lot of businesses are unaware of such rebate programs that can make commercial equipment more affordable.

“With the ever-changing state and federal legislation and lack of promotion of these incentives it’s always important to do your research,” Andrew explained.

“Pressure cleaners are essential for many small businesses and this initiative ensures they can afford the best.”

The Kärcher team are always happy to assist at their Kärcher Center’s nationally or at www.karcher.com.au

First time turfstripping before World Cup Brazil

The World Cup matches in the 12 stadiums will be played on Rye grass, which does not stand the Brazilian tropical conditions very well.

The new Corinthians stadium of Sao Paulo already contains Rye grass which is being cooled down from underneath through pipes. The other 11 stadiums currently
contain Bermuda grass.

The Bermuda grass is dorment in the Brazilian winter months of June and July when the World Cup is being played. From April 2014 onwards, these fields
will be verticut or fraised down to the roots. This will then be followed by heavy overseeding up to the start of the World Cup on June 12, 2014. Also,
several training fields will require fraise mowing in order to clean them from weed and bad grasses.

Last week, Redexim’s Turfstripper was used with great success for the very first turf fraise mowing job ever to take place in Brazil, in the Santo André
stadium in Sao Paulo. This stadium will be used as a training ground during the World Cup.

Pelé scored his first professional goal ever at Santos Futebol Clube in the Santo André Stadium.

Students benefit from new mowing equipment

Jacobsen, through their Victoria-based dealer Godings, have recently committed to a three-year agreement to provide NMIT with new equipment for use on
the five golf courses managed by the institute. The new machines will also be used for classroom technical training.

Included in the agreement is an annual scholarship for the top performing student to travel to America and take part in Jacobsen’s Future Turf Managers’
Programme (FTM). This programme sees similar top performing students from the major US colleges being invited to Jacobsen’s headquarters in Charlotte,
North Carolina for a week-long training, mentoring and networking event.

NMIT’s Brian Parr contacted the Managing Director of Jacobsen’s APAC division, Alan Prickett, through the mower manufacturer’s Melbourne distributor Godings.
Prickett flew down from Singapore to conduct the negotiations and sign the agreement. As a result, two new machines have been purchased for use on
the golf courses and a walking greens mower donated to NMIT.

Melissa Giffard, Associate Director for the Faculty of Earth Sciences at NMIT said from their perspective, it is a fantastic opportunity for their students
to get experience and exposure to the industry’s cutting edge equipment.

“Also, the opportunity to travel to America and undertake some training and gain some experience at different locations in the USA will be of great benefit.
You can’t buy that sort of opportunity. For us, we are rapt because it just adds value to the students training.”

Jacobsen’s Alan Prickett added that Jacobsen put a lot of time, effort and money into training initiatives all over the world.

“When I began looking after Asia Pacific, one of the things I wanted to roll out were the education programmes we have been running in Europe and the States.
College support programmes are a classic win-win situation. They assist the colleges operationally, but are also good for both our brand exposure and
in allowing student greenkeepers to operate our state-of-the-art mowers, getting comfortable on them while they’re at college.

“We obviously hope that this early exposure to Jacobsen products will give a positive impression that will stay with them through their careers,” Mr Prickett
concluded.

Successful seminar in Philippines

Formost Machinery and Resources inc, the Jacobsen distributor for the Philippines, held a successful one-day seminar and workshop at Eagle Ridge Golf &
Country Club recently.

Raymond Bunquin, General Manager at Eagle Ridge welcomed over 30 guests to the golf course and said that he was delighted to host the event and hoped that
everyone would have an informative and enjoyable day.

Peter Morison, Jacobsen’s Director of Sales for Asia Pacific, gave a presentation on the new products in the Jacobsen portfolio and outlined the new product
enhancements on both the LF550 and LF570. These make for easier maintenance and the new electronic hydrostat control allows the superintendant to set
the mow speed, which the operator cannot change,  while out on the course.

Attendees came from across the groundscare sector, with representation from the golf industry, landscape contractors, international schools, sports fields
and public areas.

Formost’s President Alberto ‘Brix’ Del Rosario II provided an overview of the business, the new resources available and Formost’s commitment to deliver
the best service in the industry. Dave Ong and Gabriel Artajo from the company’s service team demonstrated the Jacobsen Eclipse walk behind mower with
15 bladed reels and how the frequency of clip can be changed to provide consistency of cut and smoothness on a golf green. The event concluded with
an open forum where participants could speak to Jacobsen and Formost on various topics related to the maintenance of fine turf.

Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club, the venue for this one-day seminar, is the largest golf course complex in South East Asia. There are four courses,
designed by Greg Norman, Andy Dye, Isao Aoki and Nick Faldo. It includes five residential enclaves, golf villas, hotel, swimming pools, bowling alleys,
cinema and a Ten Pin bowling centre.

Earlier this year the golf course maintenance team took delivery of three Jacobsen LF570 fairway mowers, six Jacobsen Greens King 522A walk behind greens
mowers and a Cushman SprayTek.

Trimax to distribute direct within Australia

For the past 27 years Howard have been the distributor for Trimax in Australia, but starting from January 1, 2014, this will no longer be the case.

Trimax have set themselves up as their own distributor in Australia with a brand new warehouse and operations centre in the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Brent Willing, the Manufacturer’s Representative from Trimax Mowing Systems comments about what the change means to owners of Trimax-made mowers.

“Our goal is to have an experienced and tight family of dealers that provide great customer service for our products. We already have over 4,000 machines
sold into the Australian market, so we’ve got a great name for our product already and we know there’s a heap of them out there.

“Our focus is really making sure the owners of products get the parts and backup service they need,” said Brent.

Owners and operators of ProCut, Stealth, Pegasus or any other Trimax mower that was previously Howard-branded are encouraged to contact Trimax. This will
ensure they receive personalised service and support, and have the opportunity to pass on any feedback about their mower.

The strong focus Trimax places on understanding it’s customer’s needs is summed up in this statement:

“Our belief at Trimax is that our customers are like family, and like family we look out for each other. If you have a problem that you need solving then we’re here to help in any way we can. Our mowing solutions and the positive impact these solutions have on our environments have been realised throughout the world. Our comprehensive range of commercial mowers are designed with our family in mind, this means we’re building machines that produce the best cut possible whilst ensuring you spend less time and money on maintenance.”

Trimax has a full-time focus on turf maintenance equipment — they don’t make agricultural equipment such as rotary hoes or tillers. Their whole company
structure is based around finding innovative, long lasting, low maintenance solutions for mowing grass and supporting their users throughout the process.

During the 27 years of partnership with Howard, Trimax has gained customer insights resulting in user valued products.

Trimax was originally established in New Zealand, however the company has been exporting successfully all over the world for over 30 years. They have become
a desired brand in council mowing in Australia, the UK and New Zealand with their Pegasus and Stealth mowers, among other product.

Brent said it is very important to treat each State of Australia on it’s own merit, as the conditions vary greatly from State to State.

”For example, Victoria is a strong market because it is the closest in environment to New Zealand, despite still having dry periods where the grass doesn’t
grow,” Brent said.

“The team at Trimax would love to hear from users if they currently own — or have had experience with — a Trimax product. Any feedback is welcomed,
good or bad, as this information helps drive future innovation,” Brent concluded.

Trimax can be contacted by phoning 1800 874 629, or by visiting their website at www.trimaxmowers.com or by joining the conversation on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/trimaxmowingsystems

Jacobsen extending golf frontier into Myanmar

Jacobsen, through their local distributor Forest Park Co Ltd of Yangong, have recently organised a two day educational training seminar for the Myanmar
Golf Federation and greenkeepers from the country’s golf courses, which number over 100, with many that are vestiges of the British colonisation of
the area.

The country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was originally governed by the British along with Malaya to the South and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh)
and India to the North West. It is a resource rich country which is currently expanding its economy at a rapid pace, allowing a resurgence of golf
to gradually develop.

The seminar included a day of educational presentations by Peter Morison and Glenn Wright of Jacobsen, who set out the approach that the manufacturer has
to providing machinery and service in the region. They provided maintenance best practice advice and this included how to set up a professional workshop
and greenkeeping facility.

Chris Gray and David Paterson of Rainbird were also present and gave technical presentations that included the provision of modern irrigation systems and
touched on the important subjects of water sourcing, storage, use of sewage and grey water as well as the importance of monitoring soil moisture content
through a new system which the company has recently introduced into the marketplace.

In addition Howard Swan, golf course architect at Swan Golf Designs, talked to the 120 strong body of delegates about professional golf course design,
the renovation of existing courses and the provision of new courses. He also spoke eloquently on how the game could be expanded throughout the country
at grass roots level by providing simple and economic short courses, driving ranges and academies, which could reach out to local communities and involve
opportunities for vocational and craft skills development training.

The second day of the event was centred at Yangon Golf Club (originally the Rangoon Golf Club) where Peter Morison, Glenn Wright and Thaik Din of Forest
Park hosted a training demonstration of greens and other golf course mowing equipment. This focused on the ability of the Eclipse walking greens mower
to change its frequency of cut, which improved the trueness and smoothness of the ball roll and increased green speed.

Commenting at the close of the event, Howard Swan said the opportunity in Myanmar, as well as the relatively undeveloped parts of this region of Asia,
is immense.

“Considerable anticipation is held by all the parties for their future involvement in the expansion of golf in the country. I applaud Jacobsen for their
time and effort in putting this event together; it was certainly appreciated by the very enthusiastic group that attended the event,” Mr Swan said.

Victa lawnmowers – the Australian equation

With lawn mowing season in full swing, the manufacturing facility at Briggs & Stratton in Moorebank, NSW, is a hive of activity, pumping out up to
9,000 mowers a week. And overall, the Moorebank facility produces between 165,000 and 205,000 Victa mowers a year.

Thirty-three permanent staff and up to 50 casuals are kept busy assembling the beloved and acclaimed Victa lawn mowers in the 9,000sqm facility which adjoins
the company’s head office.

“Many people think everything is manufactured in China these days, but that’s not necessarily the case with Victa mowers,” says Hiren Parekh, plant manager
at Briggs & Stratton.

“Victa petrol powered push mowers and the vast majority of Victa power products continue to be assembled in Australia at our facility. And the mower decks
are manufactured locally and then painted in our state-of-the-art powder coating paint shop.”

In addition, Australian-made nuts and bolts and plastic components are used on the lawnmowers.

It takes about 10 minutes to assemble each mower, depending on the model, with premium mowers taking up to 102 minutes to assemble and the team is able
to ramp production up or down in a matter of two to three days, from 500 mowers to 2,000 mowers per day.

“Besides the Victa mowers, we also produce up to 4,000 Victa trimmers and 2,000 vacuums for the professional range,” adds Hiren.

Production is streamlined with a palletising robot that stacks mowers on the pallets. This saves having to manually transfer the mower boxes onto pallets
for storage and transport.

Caring for the environment also plays a key role in the facility’s operation, and it has agreements to use reusable baskets and bins with local suppliers
to reduce packaging.

Longevity

Briggs & Stratton has many long term, loyal manufacturing employees. In fact 20 out of 33 permanent staff have been employed there for over 20 years.

One such staff member, Liz Mitreska, has been employed by Victa for an impressive 35 years. Liz works on the main mower line, assembling the mowers with
up to 20 parts per mower.

“We get rotated on the line about four times a day and I work on all parts of the mower, hand assembling the wheels, flaps, springs and handles plus other
parts of the mowers,” Liz explains. “I really enjoy the camaraderie. The people I work with are great; there’s a really nice culture in the manufacturing
facility that keeps me happy at work.”

Duy Phuc Do is another long term employee who will soon clock up 28 years. After 21 years of working on the manufacturing line, seven years ago Duy was
promoted to Quality Control Technician.

“I studied mechanical engineering which really helps me in this role,” says Duy.

“I work on the end of the line checking the finished mowers and parts. If necessary, I collaborate with the engineering department to fix any issues that
may occur.

“I particularly enjoy learning and growing in this position. Also, my co-workers are a friendly bunch, which makes coming to work an enjoyable experience.”

Graden team up with ADE Turf

Graden Industries has been the leading designer and manufacturer of quality scarifiers for the Turf industry around the world for over 20 years.

Quality materials, coupled with well researched and tested design have seen the acceptance of the Contour Sand Injector and Swing-wing Fairway Scarifier
as the best in the business. With 95% of the Victorian factory production being sent overseas to markets in the USA, Europe and Asia, it was apparent domestic representation required a boost.

In recent years Toro has been the sole representative of Graden in Australia, but to broaden representation locally Graden Industries have announced ADE
Turf Equipment as the new major dealer for Victoria.

ADE Turf Equipment has a prominent and growing presence in the Victorian turf industry, with a dedicated sales and service operation to back up an extensive
range of equipment on offer. Their enthusiasm for the inclusion of the full Graden range of equipment will see opportunities for demonstrations of
not only the established Graden scarifiers, but also new releases.

One such release is the Graden TB 200, an innovative ground engaging sweeper.

If the core of any golf course greens management program is top dressing and aerification, the TB 200 is definitely an effective tool for consideration.

With its counter rotating brushes, it completely fills core holes and verticutting with sand, at the same time effectively smoothing the surface by agitating
the sand into the lower level of the green canopy. This has an added benefit of protecting the blades on mowers following the process.

If your greens maintenance program has a basis of regular dusting, tests have shown that considerable labour time can be saved with as little as ten minutes
per green with far superior playability resulting from the process.

Used on a regular basis to “groom” the greens, longer coarse blades of grass get teased up and mown off, producing superior ball roll and playing conditions.

Simple ground engagement drive system removes unnecessary electric or hydraulic drive motors producing a machine that is low on maintenance and, combined
with its strong construction, is built for years of trouble free operation.

For all Graden machine enquiries contact Paul Kruger, Golf and Turf Equipment Manager at ADE Turf Equipment on 0400 533 050.
