Agsafe shortlisted for international stewardship award

Agsafe General Manager, Alison Carmichael, is pleased to announce that the organisation has been named as a finalist in the international Agrow Awards
2015 for ‘Best Stewardship Programme (Accreditation & Training,
drumMUSTER and ChemClear)’.

“The award category recognises outstanding schemes that manage agrochemical or agbiotech products in the marketplace in a sustainable way,” she said.

“We are in good company with Croplife Australia also being shortlisted for their Pollinator Protection Initiative, along with Andef Brazil, Impev Brazil
and The Mediae Company.”

The Agrow Awards were developed
to reward excellence in the crop protection and production industry. This is the eighth instalment of the prestigious awards which calls for applications
from around the globe.

Ms Carmichael reflects that Agsafe has grown over 22 years from a small, industry accreditation program to become Australia’s largest industry stewardship
organisation servicing the agricultural and veterinary chemical industry, farmers and other users of chemical products.

The organisation provides safety advice and training to over 1400 retail premises through its Accreditation & Training program, ensuring that around
95% of the chemical retail industry is committed to staff and customer safety.

“Stores achieving Agsafe accreditation are maintaining compliance and reducing risk in an industry which deals with products with the potential to create
serious risk to the environment, users and the wider community,” said Accreditation & Training Manager Frances Cameron.

Agsafe is also active in removing the pollution risk posed by unwanted chemical products. The drumMUSTER program collects and
recycles empty agvet chemical containers, while ChemClear collects and sustainably destroys unwanted or out-of-date chemicals.

drumMUSTER and ChemClear National Program Manager Allan McGann said, “Agsafe’s product stewardship programs are an integral part
of the Australian agricultural landscape. The commitment to the programs from all stakeholders demonstrates the importance of chemical and container
management. We are extremely proud to be nominated for such a prestigious international award.”

The winner will be announced on 17 September 2015 in London.

The end of an era as the last Ransomes commander rolls off the production line

The final Ransomes Commander 5-gang cylinder mower has rolled off the production line at Ransomes Jacobsen’s manufacturing plant in Ipswich.

Operations Director Simon Rainger addresses Ransomes staff as the final Commander comes off the line

Operations Director Simon Rainger addresses Ransomes staff as the final Commander comes off the line

A stalwart of wide area mowing for municipal authorities, local councils and groundscare contractors for over 20 years, the first incarnation of the Commander
was produced in 1994 and since then it has had numerous upgrades and improvements.

Destined for a customer in France, this last machine is a tribute to Tony ‘Mr Commander’ Dunnage, one of Ransomes assembly technicians who sadly passed
away last year. A special memorial plate has been inserted into the engine compartment by his colleagues on the line to recognise Tony’s contribution
to the production of the machine.

At a short ceremony to celebrate the completion of this last machine, Operations Director Simon Rainger provided a brief overview of its development stating
that at launch it cost just over £27,000. Today’s replacement, the recently launched Ransomes MP495, costs in the region of £48,000.

He also paid tribute to the assembly technicians who, for the past three months, have been building both the old and the new versions as the Commander
was being phased out.

To applause from the assembled staff, the last machine drove away from the line to the strains of Gracie Field’s popular song from World War 2 “Wish Me
Luck As You Wave Me Good-Bye” — a fitting tribute to the fine ‘old lady’ of municipal mowing.

Hiring for our future

Kennards Hire is preparing to begin their annual charity initiative, ‘Kennards For Kids’, which kicks off on the 1st of September.

Hiring for our future

Running throughout September and October, the hire chain is looking to make life a little easier for sick, injured and disadvantaged kids around Australia
and New Zealand, and help them get the best start to life possible.

For over 10 years the family owned business has used the months of September and October to raise funds and awareness for carefully selected children’s
charities by donating $2 from each hire to these worthy causes. Kennards Hire are encouraging businesses and families to get involved this year, after
their most successful year in 2014 where they raised over $350,000 for kids in need in Australia and New Zealand

This year Kennards will be donating proceeds to Stepping Stone House, Kids Xpress, Variety – the Children’s Charity, the Constable Care Foundation and
the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“We believe that every child deserves a fair start in life and the opportunity to realise their potential,” said Liz Ward, CEO of Kennards Hire. “This
is my first year being involved with Kennards For Kids, but it is a project that I have admired and I look forward to working closely with the charities
to help break the negative cycles that can begin early on in a child’s life.”

Anyone is able to throw their support behind Kennards For Kids and the charity-partners by visiting your local Kennards Hire branch and hiring equipment
for any building, renovating or spring-cleaning projects you might have throughout September and October.

Jacobsen begins production of new HoverKing mower

Jacobsen announced today that production has begun on the new Jacobsen HoverKing hover mower.

New HoverKing™ is the lightest hover mower on the market

New HoverKing™ is the lightest hover mower on the market

The all-new HoverKing is the lightest hover mower on the market at just 11.7kg (26 lbs) (40.6cm/16 inch version) and features an advanced design and superior
ergonomics – making it the easiest hover mower to operate in difficult areas. The 50.8cm (20 inch) version weighs only 16.5kg (36.5 lbs)

“Hover mowers typically maintain the most sloped areas on a golf course where mowing is very difficult,” said Chris Fox, Product Manager for Jacobsen.
“We saw a real need for a lighter, more rugged hover mower that could be easily operated, manoeuvred and transported. The HoverKing’s lighter weight
and ergonomic handle design make it easier to operate in all conditions.”

Lightweight yet extremely durable, the HoverKing also features integrated handle mounts that stand up to the rigors of daily use.

“During our field research, superintendents told us that one of the most common problem areas on current hover mowers is where the handle mounts to the
deck,” said Fox. “Our engineers integrated the HoverKing’s handle mounts into the engine mount, providing a much more durable attachment point that
will hold up over time.”

Another exclusive feature of the HoverKing is that it offers a height-of-cut of 7.6cm (3 inches), the highest in the industry. In addition, the HoverKing
offers three cutting system options: metal blade, metal edge with nylon blade or nylon string.

More information on the product offering can be found at www.jacobsen.com

The HoverKing's lighter weight and superior ergonomics make it easy to manoeuvre, even on steep inclines.

Jacobsen and local distributor support NZGCSA Future Turf Managers’ Initiative

The NZGCSA, in conjunction with Jacobsen and their distributor, Power Turf New Zealand Ltd, held their latest Future Turf Managers’ Initiative at The Royal
Wellington Golf Club.

Jacobsen and local distributor support NZGCSA Future Turf Managers’ Initiative

Attending the Future Turf Managers’ Initiative were (L to R) Brendan Allen, Daniel Cawley, Stuart Baird, Wendy Horneman, Adam Dyet and John Spraggs.

This two-day educational event is aimed at up and coming greenkeepers who are focused on making the career leap to Superintendent or Course Manager. Focusing
on personal and professional development, the FTMI uses the expertise of respected course managers, cross-industry training specialists and industry
experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

This year’s delegates were Wendy Horneman of Pakuranga Country Club, Adam Dyet of The Kinloch Club, Daniel Cawley of Whangarei Golf Club and Stuart Baird
of Akarana Golf Club. Their mentors were of the highest calibre; Brenden Allen, Superintendent at The Hills Golf Club, home of this year’s New Zealand
Open and John Spraggs, Superintendent at the host club, Royal Wellington.

An intense couple of days saw the delegates focusing on human behaviour, identifying their own behavioural preferences, understanding leadership, developing
strategies for motivation, conflict resolution and utilising business communication techniques.

The four New Zealand delegates join a cohort of over 60 greenkeepers from around the globe, who have graduated from the Future Turf Managers Initiative
over the past three years.

Speaking at the close of the event delegate Wendy Horneman said,

“We had great sessions with Jan Alley, a business consultant from Auckland, and covered a lot of the people management skills that you don’t get taught
elsewhere. The two mentors were brilliant; they have so much knowledge of fine turf management and were happy to answer any questions we put to them.
We even had the opportunity to listen to Professor Jack Fry from Kansas State University, who Jacobsen had sponsored to deliver seminars in New Zealand,
Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

“I would recommend anyone with ambitions to become a Superintendent to get on this programme next year. It has been invaluable to me and, although very
intense, it was fun,” Wendy concluded.

Increase customer loyalty and boost your bottom line

Even the toughest machinery components suffer from wear and tear over time, which can lead to unwanted repair costs for customers, unwanted downtime for
tradespeople and lost sales to business owners.

Increase customer loyalty and boost your bottom line

Whether it’s routine maintenance or a complete engine overhaul, Briggs & Stratton has one piece of advice: insist on nothing less than genuine replacement
parts.

“Like any good investment, a piece of equipment only retains its worth when it is maintained to the standard by which it is manufactured,” says Kevin Kelly,
Briggs & Stratton’s Category Manager – Parts and Accessories.

“Take the time to explain to customers the importance of maintaining the quality of their investment by using genuine spare parts and you could see some
substantial benefits.”

Some aftermarket parts are built to a cost, so fit and quality are often sacrificed. Also, some may restrict the engine from performing to its maximum
potential, can increase fuel consumption, and could end up costing the consumer more in the long run.

Increase customer loyalty and boost your bottom line

“Aftermarket brands will do the job to an extent, but at what cost to the integrity of the engine, its reliability, and its quality? Manufacturers invest
a lot of time and money in developing the best possible end product and have a range of parts and accessories to support the range,” Kevin says.

“They’re just like the parts used when the equipment was built – and quite simply they’re the best option when it comes to maintaining quality and performance.”

Peace of mind is the key message dealers and retailers need to remember when advising customers of the advantages of using genuine Briggs & Stratton
parts.

“You don’t want your fire fighting pump or generator to give you trouble, or not perform to its best, when you need it most because of an aftermarket part.
Customers trust their dealer to give them the correct part, advice and service,” adds Kevin.

For customers who are concerned that genuine spare parts may cost more than aftermarket options, simply remind them that they will get what they pay for
– and may not be happy with the result, as aftermarket parts are not made to the same OEM specifications.

“Make sure the customer understands that aftermarket parts are made to a price point, which could mean they may not perform to the same OEM standards,”
Kevin says.

“Educate customers that, while they may save a few dollars now, it may cost them more in the long run. This high quality approach helps to maximise customer
uptime and keeps equipment operating with maximum efficiency.”

Kevin advises dealers and retailers to keep the conversation positive. “Remind the customer of the benefits of using genuine spare parts and the reason
that they chose a Briggs and Stratton product in the first place – quality, integrity and reliability.”

Briggs & Stratton’s genuine spare parts range is extensive and includes items such as:

  • Air filters
  • Fuel filters
  • Oil filters
  • Valves
  • Cleaners
  • 2-stroke and 4-stroke oils and lubricants
  • Switches
  • Spark plugs
  • Starter Repair kit
  • Engine Service kit
  • Let’s Get Started kit
  • Starter rope and grip

Ransomes Jacobsen Public Relations Manager wins international writing award

Peter Driver, Ransomes Jacobsen’s long-serving Public Relations Manager, has won an international writing award from the Turf and Ornamental Communicators
Association (TOCA), a US-based professional body composed of editors, writers and publishers involved in ‘green industry’ communications.

Peter Driver (left) receives his TOCA award from Ransomes Jacobsen’s Managing Director Alan Prickett

From the 27 entries submitted in the international category of the 2015 contest he won Best Writing (article or editorial) for a feature entitled “As Nature
Intended”. This significant editorial article was an in-depth look at Askernish, a lost golf course in the Outer Hebrides that was rediscovered back
in 2006, and was published in Pitchcare magazine last year.

Peter has been associated with Ransomes Jacobsen, the Ipswich-based manufacturer of commercial mowing equipment for golf courses and local authorities,
for over 20 years; initially as a consultant, then joining the company in 2007.

“I feel highly honoured to receive this award as the judging panel is comprised of my peer group, so it’s editors and journalists acknowledging that my
writing is of an acceptable standard,” Peter said, commenting on his award.

“I am very fortunate that my job allows me to visit some of the most spectacular places and countries around the world and then have the opportunity to
write about my experiences.”

“This particular assignment was fascinating; a golf course consultant heard a rumour that an Old Tom Morris golf course was hidden away on the remote island
in the Outer Hebrides and he set out to see if it was true and to restore it, if at all possible. Our company became involved and donated equipment
to help the islanders maintain the course in its ‘natural’ state and I was lucky enough to visit and write about it.”

Alan Prickett, Managing Director of Ransomes Jacobsen added that Peter has worked tirelessly over the years to promote Ransomes Jacobsen and to spread
good news about their successes and notable events, along with those of their worldwide dealer network.

“We have always appreciated the quality of his work, but it’s absolutely terrific to see a prestigious organisation like TOCA recognising it too. The award
is well-deserved and we are all delighted for him.”

Fiskars lightens up garden work

Most green thumbs would agree that you often find yourself spending more time working in the garden than relaxing in it.

Fiskars Garden Light range creates the ultimate gardening experience

Fiskars Garden Light range creates the ultimate gardening experience

Between heavy tools, straining muscles and long hours, it can often feel like you may never get the fruits of your labour from your own backyard and garden.
Thankfully, Fiskars doesn’t’t believe gardening should be a constant back-breaking effort without any rewards. Which is why the fabulous Fiskars Light
garden equipment range has come to fruition.

After extensive research into ergonomics and anthropometry the Fiskars Garden Light tools have been developed with optimal geometric angles to reduce strain
and excessive hard work. The handle sits at a 17º angle and the shaft at a 26º angle from head of the tool, meaning better grip and general working
position. Manufactured with the high-quality materials, these feather-weight garden implements reduce user fatigue even when your garden demands a
great deal of tender, love and care. Offering four different tools, the Garden Light range includes a pointed spade, square spade, fork and a 14 steel-pronged
rake.

This Fiskars range is designed to be easy-to-use in the backyard as possible, therefore each tool features aluminium shafts to cut back on bulk and weight
without sacrificing durability. The spades weigh in at an impressive 1.2kg, far below the weight of regular spades on the market. The blades, forks
and prongs of the Garden Light range are all made from durable and rust-proof stainless steel. Ergonomic, softgrip handles have also been added to
the design to allow optimal control and comfort, so you can actually look forward maintaining your garden as much as you will enjoy relaxing in it
too.

Mulching for soil improvement, added productivity or property appearance

Nobili the Italian manufacturer of tractor mounted mulchers has led the world in developing innovative machines which have also won important international
markets in farming, in land management and contracting and amongst government agencies.

Mulching for soil improvement, added productivity or property appearance

Silvan Australia has been the Australia representative for Nobili for many years and today offers a comprehensive range of models with cutting width options
from .95 up to 8.20 metres that are designed to suit tractors from 30Kw (40 hp), up to over 330 Kw(450 hp).

Nobili Mulchers are a key resource in reducing all types of grasses, orchard or vineyard prunings and heavier organic residues into a fine mulch that on
release evenly behind the mulcher will decompose quickly as humus that improves soil quality and productivity.

Mulching returns the nutrients in the material including nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as a complete set of soil nutrients.

Especially as it decomposes the mulched material increases soil nitrogen levels thereby reducing fertilizer requirements.

Silvan Australia’s machinery specialist Gavin Wheatcroft says that Nobili mulchers are commonly applied in a wide range of on property situations.

“Typical mulching tasks range from general paddock clearing, to weed management, pasture topping, crop residue breakdown after harvest, seasonal orchard
and vineyardmaintenance, parks and garden management, with roadside verge clearing being some of the common applications.

“Nobili places great emphasis on the quality of its products and with an ISO 9001certified system their mulchers are manufactured to obtain the best performance
from all types of applications and are built specifically to suit the available tractor horsepower.”

Mr Wheatcroft says that some of the key Nobili product features are the floating top link that enables the machine to follow ground contours, the overrun
clutch in the gear box for driveline protection, the precision balanced central rotors that provide vibration free operation, while all components
are fully painted prior to assembly to increase durability and corrosion protection.

Power is provided by the high quality belt drive to give excellent power transmission while skid plates or an optional rear roller or wheels are available
to give a consistent working height especially when working on uneven ground.

Mr Wheatcroft says that the typical Nobili body design ensures that thematerial being broken down is circulated several times to be impacted by the rotor
blades ensuring it is reduced to a fine residue that is ready to decompose.

Models are available that are ideal for mulching heavier material such as orchard or vineyard prunings or for crop stubbles without compromising the machine
speed.

Additional Nobili product features are replaceable wear plates, a choice of knife or hammer blades on the precision balanced rotor to suit the material
being mulched, while hydraulic side shift options are available for use in plantations or orchards where mulching needs to work around canopies, tree
or row obstructions.

Silvan Australia draws on a wealth of Nobili mulching experience and offers guidance to farmers, property owners, contractors and government agencies to
match the right model to the likely working conditions.

Dig smarter, not harder

Digging holes in the garden can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t have the equipment on hand. While most gardeners would naturally reach for
the traditional shovel or spade when it comes to digging, they can often be inaccurate, leaving you with a far larger hole than necessary which can
put nearby delicate root systems at risk.

Dig smarter, not harder

Fiskars unveils new QuikDrillfor easy backyard digging

The QuikDrill™ is a brand new approach to hole digging and soil extraction. Developed by the garden equipment guru’s, Fiskars, the QuikDrill™
is designed to not only to make the task easier, but more comfortable and enjoyable. With the ability to penetrate up to 600mm of soil with ease, the
QuikDrill™ will make light work of compact soils, clay and even light stony ground.

Using only the finest of materials and advanced engineering, the QuikDrill™ features two optimally angled boron steel blades secured around a sharp
soil-piercing drill spike to easily breach the surface and avoid jamming as the tool digs deeper into the top soil. The newly designed, efficient drilling
system nullifies common problems associated with cutting through tough layers of grass, earth, roots and other debris. The QuikDrill™ also cleverly
removes exiting soil, depositing it in a neat pile around the hole ready to be removed once you’ve finished drilling.

The QuikDrill™ includes three interchangeable fixed blade options for all digging applications; the 100mm blades are perfect for planting bulbs,
aerating/fertilising soil and installing small posts. The 150mm blades are designed for perennial planting, mixing compost and installing medium sized
posts, while the 200mm blades are ideal for planting hedges and trees, drilling compost holes and installing larger diameter posts.

Constructed with a lightweight steel shaft and FiberComp™ handle, Fiskars QuikDrill™ offers a more ergonomic and comfortable gardening experience,
completely removing the hard-yakka commonly associated with gardening and yard maintenance.
